Do you recognise any of these?

An open planner or calendar on a wooden table, with the days of the month visible in a grid format.
  • Your life feels centred around symptoms, appointments, medication and managing your health.

  • You feel frustrated by what your body can no longer do.

  • You avoid activities because you're worried about pain, fatigue, breathlessness or a flare-up.

  • You feel frustrated when others don't understand what you're going through, particularly when your condition isn't visible.

  • Anxiety seems to make your physical symptoms worse, leaving you unsure what's causing what.

  • You've withdrawn from friends, hobbies, work or activities because your symptoms feel unpredictable or exhausting, making you feel isolated and disconnected.

  • You're struggling to balance looking after your health with living the life you want.

These experiences are more common than you might think. Living with a long-term health condition can bring uncertainty, loss and change. It's understandable if anxiety, low mood or stress have become part of your experience.

How CBT can help

Therapy won't cure your illness, but it can help you feel less overwhelmed, more confident and better able to live a meaningful life with your condition.

Three steps of CBT: Understand thoughts, feelings and behaviours; experiment with new ways of responding in everyday life; and move forward towards meaningful change.
  • Understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, physical symptoms and behaviours.

  • Build confidence in doing activities you may have been avoiding.

  • Find a healthier balance between rest, activity and managing your symptoms.

  • Challenge unhelpful thoughts about yourself, your health and your future.

  • Improve low mood, motivation and enjoyment.

  • Cope with uncertainty and changes in your health.

  • Develop practical strategies for managing stress and difficult emotions.

  • Reconnect with the people, activities and things that matter to you.

  • Feel more able to live your life alongside your condition, rather than feeling defined by it.
